Eamon arrived in Australia as a young backpacker, eager to explore and grow his career. As an avid footballer, he got involved in a local team. At a fundraiser event one evening, he cheekily auctioned one pack of Tayto Chips. The pack went for $25 by a Kilkenny man, who graciously give it to his Galway girlfriend, pictured right. Eamon knew then there was a business worth exploring further.
Working full time in construction and as a barman, Eamon used the funds as seed capital to arrange the first shipment of chips, one pallet. In which he stored in his bedroom in Sydney. Pictured right.
The experience of shipping and selling this pallet, give Eamon the confidence to form Taste Ireland and begin to operate a full time venture. Taste Ireland was registered and Eamon got busy doing almost everything in business, Eamon pictured right hiring a truck to deliver the goods to customers.
Not satisfied with just supplying Pubs and cafes with a select range of brands, Eamon launched a B2C online store, tasteireland.com.au where Irish ex pats from all over Australia could now buy the goods and get them delivered to their homes. At this point he started building the team, pictured right launching the Online Store at Sydney Opera House.
Much of this period was focused on building a nation wide distribution through independent retailers. Irish Pubs, Beach side Cafes, Convenience Stores, Chippy's, Butchers and Specialty Stores. Eamon pictured right with a warehouse full of Tayto ready supply Irish Pubs for St Patrick's Day.
Facebook had recently launched and Eamon was quick to use Social Media as a means to connect and communicate to customers. He also was aware of the importance of growing his B2B and B2C database and sending regular communications via email, the B2C database had grown to over 24,000 subscribers since launching in 2004. As the business expanded, so was the need to relocate to a larger Head Office and Warehousing Facility in Botany. Ironically Port Botany was the location Captain Cook first arrived in Australia, more importantly it was home to Australia's largest Docks and Warehousing district. After 7 years hard work building our own distribution, Retail giants Wooloworths approached Taste Ireland to range a selection of the most popular brands in 500 of their stores. Tayto chips, Club Soft drinks and Barrys Tea where the first Irish food brands to appear on Australian supermarket shelves. This widening of the distribution made it even more convenient for customers to get their hands on these iconic brands from home.
Australia's second retail giant Coles where quick to follow Woolworths and increased the Irish range further, available in 600 Coles stores Australia wide. Photo right illustrating the significance of the listing as Taste Ireland made headlines in Australia and in Ireland.
As social media became more mainstream Taste Ireland's social presence grew stronger. Facebook, Instagram were excellent mediums to engage and communicate with our community. We had over 50,000 followers across all platforms with exceptional engagement levels. We realized the need to have in-house experts to take advantage of these emerging and growing technologies and platforms.
With a highly streamlined supply chain and significant buying power, we started to partner with distributors located in ex-pat communities across the world; Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore. This growth strategy is set to evolve in the coming years.
A recent rebrand of our B2B operation to Taste Food Distributors is an exciting phase of the companies growth plans. Utilizing existing networks, supplier partnerships and established distribution we have began working with iconic food brands from throughout Europe. This broadens our appeal but still maintains our brand values of community and connection with home.
